If you look for the
word stress in the dictionary, you will read:
“great worry caused by a difficult situation,
or something which causes this condition”
What is stress?
When we talk about stress we often give it a
negative meaning. However stress is a phenomenon
that has a strong link with people’s survival.
Every change, every alteration of a specific
status causes a reaction that we try to handle
in the best way we can.
A typical example consists in stress caused by
changing of season, which affects our
physical and psychological sphere as well as our
clearness of mind.
Positive
and negative stress
If you get very busy at work and you have to face many
difficulties, your body will automatically get stressed.
Stress can be called positive (eustress) if it is
proportionate to your strength and energies, while it
becomes negative (distress) if it is stronger
than your capacities.
According to Hans Selye (who discovered the
General Adaptation Syndrome, GSA) the difference
between eustress (physiological stress) and
distress (pathological stress) is pretty
clear: while the first one activates a short
term and easily reversible reaction, the second
one causes a long term and irreversible reaction
which is stronger than our body’s resources
(just like the sunburn example above cited).
According to this, we can say that your health
can benefit from an active life but when this
means over work or over activity, your body can
be damaged.
Strengthen your organism through fangotherapy Thermal mud treatments can
stimulate the immune system that tends to be
weakened by stress; in this way your body gets
stronger against infections and their negative
effects. Your muscles can benefit from a thermic
stimulation by raising its vasodilation,
which has a positive effect on metabolic
exchanges and on the general condition of the
muscle itself.
Whether you are a manager or an athlete, just
remember that a holiday in Abano with its famous
thermal resorts can help you live an intense
professional or sport life with more serenity
and energy.
Just for
curiosity...
Hans Selye developed his theory about stress in
1926 while he was still a student. He was studying
the effect of a medicine on a group of guinea pigs ,
when he realised that as soon as they got an injection
of placebo, they were changing their behaviour.
Basically these reactions were caused by the fact that
the guinea pigs were taken out of their cage, caught in
somebody’s hand and pricked: he had discovered
stress!
